The Wave and Environs

The middle of June Hal and I planned a trip to the Wave in Southern Utah. We toured through Zion, Spooky Gulch, Peek-a-Boo Gulch, the Burr Trail, Kodachrome Basin, Willis Creek Narrows, the Wave, lower Antelope Canyon, Waterholes Canyon, Wupatki NM, and Walnut Canyon NM. Aside from a few car problems, we had a great photographic adventure.

At Spooky Gulch it was so dark that
that walls of the slot canyon were
black when seen by eye. But the
camera was able to pick up these
colors. It is difficult to say
what the true colors were.

Devil's Garden, a few miles down
Hole-in-Rock Road south of Es-
Escalante, was filled with
interesting hoodoos.
The rock formations in Devil's Garden
framed this lone juniper.
Devil's Garden has a variety of
formations including this
very thin arch.

This vertical wall is the southernmost
wall of Long Canyon, which makes
up most of the Burr Trail. Please
be aware that this road is paved
for its entire length and should not
scare anyone.
Grand Wash is a significant landmark for
Capitol Reef NP. A long geological
feature called the Waterpocket
Fold is like a raised edge of
plateau that runs through much of
the length of the park. The Grand
Wash is a rift in that long wall.

Here is an overview of the Wave.
It is a 3 miles hike over sand
dunes and slick rock and, as you
can see is poised at elevation. Some
people walk right by it and miss it.

I liked this particular shot
because it reminded me
of one of those red onions.

When you enter the Wave
and turn around, this is
the view you will see.

Sorry for the oversaturated image
here but it feels good to do it.
The actual Wave area is very small
and is only a couple of acres in
expanse, but the photographic oppor-
tunities are unlimited. Every angle
is a different composition.
-Hal is taking a shot of an inter-
esting aspect of the Wave here.
We met very few hikers out to the
Wave, probably due to the 105 degree
heat.
This view out from a small slot canyon
was taken off of the Burr Trail
(not the Wave area).
The Wave has a variety of swirly
area such as this.
This is one of my favorite images
of the Wave. I like the way the lines
entirely curve around.
